The Most Romantic Dessert Recipes for Christmas [Part 2]

In the previous post, we start our list of the best Christmas dishes around the globe. Today, we go on to present more tasty recipes from different cultures. If you missed our previous post, we highly recommend you read it. There were so many interesting ideas and tasty things!

Ireland: Whiskey cake

The dough is made of creamed butter, sugar, eggs, flour, and whiskey. With this dough, you cook two thin cakes, cool them down, and then stick them together using whiskey buttercream. The top of the cake is usually decorated with sugar or whiskey glaze. This recipe is very popular and said to be loved even by people who don’t like whiskey and alcohol.

Canada: Nanaimo Bars

Nanaimo Bars are triple-layer sweets. The bottom is a nanaimo base itself made of butter, sugar, cacao powder, pieces of coconut, ground almonds, and wafer crumbs. The base level is covered with a soft buttercream and then put under the top of a homemade chocolate ganache. 

Those who like sweet things never get disappointed with this recipe. 

Canada: Mulled Wine

Mulled wine is popular around the world and is also traditionally cooked for Christmas in Canada. You take a quality dry red wine base and add lemon, orange zest, and spices (cinnamon, star anise, and cloves). The Canadian version must also include maple syrup, which is both used for sweetening the drink and adding a unique and so much-loved taste in Canada. 

France: Creme Caramel

This dessert has a silky smooth texture and a unique sweet taste. To make it, you first cook the caramel and pour it on the plate. Then you need to make custard by blending together milk, eggs, and condensed milk. The custard is further put on the caramel and baked for 50 min in boiling water. The cake is served after cooling it down for at least 4 hours. 

France: Lemon tart

Lemon tart is served in almost any French cafe and is often cooked for Christmas. The basement is a crispy crust. The lemon curd that is used as a filling creates a perfect balance between sweet and sour tastes. The lemon curd is not baked one more time, so you just put it in the tart and cool everything down. The lemon tart is served with whipped cream and raspberries. 

Italy: Tiramisu 

Tiramisu originally appeared in Italy and then got many modifications and traveled around the world. The first recipe was simple and contained just 6 ingredients: eggs, powdered sugar, mascarpone, ladyfingers, espresso, and cocoa powder. Tiramisu gets its unique taste from the coffee flavor. While eating it, you enjoy a creamy texture mixed with crunchy pieces of ladyfingers. 

Italy: Cannoli

Cannoli is a traditional Italian dish that originated in ancient Sicily. Today, you can find this popular dessert in any cafe in Italy. And it can become a nice addition to your Christmas table as well. Cannoli consists of crispy shells stuffed with luscious creamy ricotta. The shell easily cracks in your mouth, and you can taste a delicious sweet cream. There are several recipe variations. Sometimes you can also find chocolate pieces, orange zest, cherries, and vanilla in the creme.

Greece: Diples

Diples are a very popular Greek dish for Christmas and New Year. Simply put, diples are made of sweet dough that is rolled and fried in Olive oil. Before serving, diples are decorated with nuts, honey, and cinnamon. Diples are never eaten dry. If there is no honey, you will most likely find them dipped in syrup. 

Greece: Kourabiedes

Kourabiedes are small baked dumplings no bigger than the size of an egg. Originally these cookies were made of flour, sheep butter, and sugar. First, they were cooked in Persia in the 7th century and then traveled to the peoples of the Balkans and Turkey. Today, the recipe usually includes cognac which gives the sweets a unique taste. Sometimes, you can also find them made with almond powder. 

Germany: Lebkuchenmänner

This is a German version of gingerbread men’s cookies. The tradition to bake gingerbread cookies and houses dates back to the 16th century. The German version is usually cooked on a special waffle called oblaten. Today, this thing can be hard to find and, as it doesn’t affect the taste, it is often neglected. Cookies can be without any decorations or have toppings made of chocolate or nuts.

Germany:  Black Forest Cake

Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte is a traditional German cake made of 2 layers of chocolate sponge cakes, whipped cream topping, and cherries. You can also find a more advanced version of the cake when the cakes are soaked in brandy or cherry syrup.
